Last leg - Over Ingleborough and back to Horton

Ingleborough looms larger (and steeper) as the clouds roll in:

Half way up the steep face of Ingleborough. Just what you want after 17 miles!

Last peak completed after 6 3/4 hrs. Just the 6 miles back to Horton left

Limestone pavement on the way down

It says just 1 1/2 miles to Horton (it lies!)

Finally back at Horton railway station

Patch, me and Rob back at Horton Cafe to clock in. Rob and Patch in 8Hrs 15 Minutes. Me in 8 and a half.

Everyone back at the hut. Micky, Dom and Anthony did it in 11hrs (I thought they were supposed to be fit Marathon runners!). Chris took the sensible valley route back from Ribblehead.

Full cooked breakfast the next morning. Lots of stiff legs

Everyone ready to leave

Thanks to all for a great weekend.
Now are we need to do is plan what to do next year!

2nd Leg - Across the moors and up Wernside

Pretty bridge breaks up the 10 miles across the moor. Patch, Rob and me starting to leave the others behind.
Ribblehead railway viaduct at base of Wernside (3 1/4 Hours gone and about 10 miles):

Still nice weather and nice views break up the long slog up Wernside:

View back to Pen-y-ghent from Wernside

2 peaks and about 14 miles down. On top of Wernside after 6 3/4 hours.

View of Ingleborough (next stop)

The 3 Peaks - 1st leg

Starting off at 7:45 Saturday 11th July 2009

(Left to Right) Micky, Dom, Anthony, Patch, Rob, Chris & My Shadow.

Weather a lot better than forecast but would it last?

Just 24 miles (40km) and 4500ft (1300m) vertical assent to go!

First View off Pen-y-ghent

We aren't the only ones stupid enough to try this (Red Cross have a big organised event)

First peak done in just 55 minutes but only about 2.5 miles completed

View across to Wernside (in distance on right) and Ingleborough (flat top on left)

Warm Up Walk

On Friday Chris, Patch Rob and me did a warm up walk around Malham

Down into Gordale Scar

Out of the Mouth of the scar

Just a little warm up of 5 miles or so

No Live Posts

Sorry I was having trouble with posting from my mobile so I didn't manage any live posts from Yorkshire.

It works fine from here but not in Yorkshire. Obviously e-mail from your mobile phone hasn't made it to deepest Yorkshire yet!

Route of the walk

Overview of the whole walk:

1st leg From Horton in Ribblesdale up Pen-y-ghent (1st peak)

Off Pen-y-ghent and accross the moor

Up to the Ribblehead Viaduct

Up to Whernside (2nd Peak)

Off Whernside and down to Chapel-le-dale
Up to Ingleborough (3rd peak)

Down off Ingleborough

Final leg back to Horton

Hopefully all in less than 12 hours and all in one piece.

The Magnificent 7

All set for going up to Yorkshire tomorrow. Quick warm up walk in Malham. Then doing the 3 peaks on Saturday.

Weather is supposed to be terrible with heavy rain but I'm sure we'll survive.

Unfortunately Mark has had to drop out so now there is just 7 of us:

Me, Rob, Patch, Chris, Micky, Anthony and Dominic.

Like last year I will try and post our progress from my mobile phone so you should be able to follow our progress if you are interested.

Latest List

This is the latest list of confirmed attendees for the 3 peaks weekend

Fully paid up:

Me
Rob
Patch
Chris J
Mark Broadhurst
Micky
Anthony Priest
Dominic Smith

Confirmed but not shown me the money:

Tony
John Buck - My mate from Wales (originally from Brum and a Blue Nose but we won't hold that against him)
Tom (still can't find a mate to come with!)

Stana has wimped out because of his daughters birthday (which isn't even until the Monday!).

So that should be 11 which is a good number but still room for 3 more if anyone finds anybody.

On our practice walk last week we decided that it would probable be good if Rob got some stuff for breakfast again like last year. So he will get some bacon & sausage for the Sunday and something quicker a lighter for Saturday.

So we will probably do a kitty to cover all remaining cost if everyone puts in £50 total (ie. an extra £30 if you have already paid £20 deposit) then that should cover the total cost of the hut and the food and leave some over to start on the beer kitty.

Practice Walk Success

The practice walk was completed successfully. We had a nice day and did about 15 miles. Me, Rob, Patch, Daggy & Yan all did the walk.

Only problem was that the pub was shut at the end!

Practice Walk Planned

Our practice walk for the 3 peaks has been planned. We are going around the Dove Dale area on Sunday the 3rd May.

Meeting at the Car Park in Thorpe near the Tissington trail and the Dog & Partridge Pub at about 9am.

The route of the walk is detailed below (maps courtesy of streetmap.co.uk - best give them a plug as I have nicked their images!)

The red dashed line is my proposed route.

If we stick to the Red route I recon it is about 13 miles. If we do the Yellow short cut (to Alstonefield) it saves about 1.5 miles. If we do the blue shortcut (back to Thorpe) it saves about a mile.

I'm sure there are other longer or shorter options we can take depending on how we feel, what the weather is like and how long we spend in the pub.

I have a couple of extra people that might join us on this walk (Ian and Gerry). They may also be interested in the full thing.

Another mate (John) from Wales is also probably joining us on the full 3 peaks walk.

Saturday 14 March 2009

The prize for the first people to pay and guarantee their place goes to Micky and his 2 mates.

I also now have the names of these mates so welcome to Anthony Priest and Dominic Smith. Apparently Anthony is a Kiwi but personally I don't care which bush he grew on as long as he buys the beer.

They are obviously all loaded because they paid up so promptly so hopefully they will also be first to the bar. Not sure if they are all super fit marathon runners like Micky but if they are there should be no excuse for not getting to the pub first.

Chris J has also paid up now so unsurprisingly it is all the Wyrley lot that haven't. Tighter than a nuns chuff in a freezer!

There has also been some talk of a practice walk. So some Sunday in May or early June could be an option for doing something in the Southern Peaks. More details to follow but any suggestions welcome.

2009 Expedition

OK so after a bit of planning we are starting to get ready for the "2009 Great Wyrley Old Boys Mountaineering & Pissup Club Annual Expedition".

This year the venue will be sunny Yorkshire and there will be no vans, no driving 1000's of miles, no deer to hit and much more beer.

We are planning to do the Yorkshire 3 peaks (Pen-y-ghent, Whernside & Inglebrook). Some details on the route can be found at http://www.3peakswalks.co.uk/ or on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_three_peaks

It is supposed to be completed in 12 hours but that might depend on how many pubs we stop at.

The accommodation is booked. We are staying at Dub-Cote Bunkhouse Barn, Horton in Ribblesdale (http://www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/ydales/bunkbarns/hortoninr/index.htm) and it's all booked up for the 10th & 11th July.

We will be doing the 3 peaks walk itself on the 11th but some of us might get up there early on the 10th for a bit of practice (well we need to find where the pubs are!).

The barn sleeps 14 and the team is starting to take shape already. It's based on last years gallant heroes plus some new blood to keep the youth policy going.

So far we have

Me
Rob Caddick
Paul Broadhurst
Chris Jackson
Tom Hodson + some mate
Mick Bride + 2 mates
Tony Caddick (maybe if rob actually talks to his brother and asks him)
Chris Stanaway
Mark Broadhurst

Anyway I will keep everyone posted on the team as it shapes up. Hopefully we will get the full 14. Getting me your £20 deposit is the only way guarantee your place although buying me some beer getting me drunk and then swearing blind you gave me the money is another option.

On a serious note I would like to just pass my condolenses on to Mark who's father passed away suddenly recently. I hope he'll still be able to join us in Yorkshire.
